The symbol represents what is endangered or lost because of what The Threat has taken. In some stories it is the Symbol it’s self that is kidnapped or threatened with harm. But, in most they simply distance themselves from the lead as they find the lead has been transformed in some way by the loss. Once what is lost is recovered, the symbol will return and hope to continue as before.
During the introduction they provide friendship and respect to you because the value the same thing as you do.
During the Conflict the are separated from you by pressures from the threat.
You approach them once more during the Suspense and they rebuff you once more.
During the Climax they overcome their fear and offer you their emotional support.
They play an important role during the Resolution as they are the voice that supports a return to your previous life.
Whether they convince you or not determines their place in the Conclusion, either as once more a major part of your life or with a much reduced role.
